If I had $20.000 to disburse to my Library I would have to determine the status of both the text material and electronic resources in relation to their age and demand. All things being equal I would take the bulk of the funds and modernize the electronic resources such as ProQuest because I believe these resources are more relevant to keeping the Library up to date. Then take a small amount (to be determined) and invest in text.
Although I chose to spend more on printed material than electronic, I completely agree with you on determining the actual need. Times have changed and I too would make sure that ProQuest is part of my resource collection. But I still have that need for actual hands-on printed resources for information that remains constant, and will never be outdated. Electronic databases are a must for today’s students, but I think printed materials are also essential.
ReplyDeleteWayne, I beleive you are exactly right. The world is moving toward electronic so this would be a great choice.
ReplyDeletewhat is proquest I have never heard of it. But I do agree with you that there needs to be alot more electical things going into the library.
